A Very Honorable Film
"Men of Honor" is a good film that steals many techniques from some of the
great military-themed films of the 1940s and 1950s. It is based on the true
story of Carl Brasher (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), the first African-American U.S.
Naval Diver. The film shows his struggles with racism during the post-World
War II era. Robert De Niro is super as his alcoholic and somewhat crazed
instructor who is upset with the world because of his inability to dive
anymore and his discipline problems within the military. De Niro and
Gooding, Jr. are truly two great actors who are at the top of their careers
in this one. The film would have been a success just because of them.
Charlize Theron, Powers Boothe, Michael Rapaport, and Hal Holbrook are all
perfect in supporting turns. George Tillman, Jr.'s direction is solid and
the screenplay is smart and insightful. A really good movie overall. 4.5 out
of 5 stars.
