| Men in Black follows the exploits of agents Kay (Jones) and Jay (Smith), members of a top-secret organization established to monitor and police alien activity on Earth. The two Men in Black find themselves in the middle of the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D'Onofrio) who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies. In order to prevent worlds from colliding, the MiB must track down the terrorist and prevent the destruction of Earth. It's just another typical day for the Men in Black. |

The Commercial Will Smith
Following on the success of 'Independence Day', Will Smith went on to make a
series of summer blockbuster films. The following year, he did 'Men in
Black' with Tommy Lee Jones (who appeared in serious films with Wesley
Snipes and Samuel L. Jackson) which both increased his marketing and
commercial value, as well as giving credibility to the urban home boy image.
It was cool to wear booggers and baggy trousers on the streets after 'Men in
Black', and even more so if it was worn by men who were black. The urban
black man across the globe was now a credible commodity to be seen with, and
it wouldn't surprise me if there was a new phase of middle class white women
forming alliances with urban black men beyond the success of this
film.
Apart from Smith, Tommy Lee Jones did bring some character and an added
dimension to the film which was much needed in 'Independence Day'. His
approach to his character portrayals made both 'US Marshalls' and 'Rules of
Engagement' highly entertaining projects.
