A Funny Caper
Charlie Croker (Michael Caine), a recent parolee, goes right back into his old line of work--robbery--by masterminding a heist of four million dollars in gold bars. But first, he has to set up the biggest traffic jam Italy has ever seen in order to pull it off....

Recently remade with Mark Wahlberg as Croker, the original "Italian Job" from 1969 is definitely the better of the two (though the remake is decent enough). It's funnier, and the car chase towards the end involving classic Mini-Coopers is longer, better, and truly thrilling (they even drive over rooftops!). Also, being a product from the swinging 60's, the colorful fashions everybody wears in this flick are a total hoot to look at. And finally, you've got good 'ol Michael Caine starring in it, and he's wonderfully witty. Benny Hill as one of Caine's accomplices and Noel Coward as a Mafia man who gets royal treatment in prison are also fun to watch.

The controversial ending of "The Italian Job" will be debated among viewers forevermore. For me, it IS a disappointing ending, as if the filmmakers didn't quite know how to conclude this caper. But hey, "The Italian Job" is a comedy after all, and you're certainly not meant to take it seriously. If you've only seen the 2003 remake, then you've GOT to see this version. The original "Italian Job" is great fun.
