| Based on a true story, a group of allied escape artist type prisoners of war are all put in an 'escape proof' camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the film is played for comedy as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel. The second half is high adventure as they use boats and trains and planes to get out of occupied Europe. |

Steve McQueen and James Coburn
After the success of 'The Magnificent Seven', McQueen and Coburn reunited
together in this classic war film 'The Great Escape'. Although McQueen is
isolated as the token American in the cooler, and Coburn plays an
unconvincing Australian, they do have one thing in common; Bruce Lee. Both
of them sign up with Bruce Lee's training school for their own personal
fitness as well as to prepare Coburn for a future role that would define him
(Our Man Flint). McQueen, alhtough tough as old boots already (by Bruce
Lee's standards), would not require martial arts for the future role that
would define him (Bullitt).
